About this Exploration:

Ron Evans was born to Jim and Marie Evans on November 10, 1933 in rural Cheyenne County Kansas.  Ron attended the St. Francis Grade School until he graduated from the eighth grade.  In 1947, the family moved to Topeka Kansas, where Ron was a member of the National Honor Society, a track star and an all Conference football guard.  He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas and a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

Captain Ron Evans was one of 19 astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966.  On his first journey into space, Captain Evans occupied the Command Module Pilot seat for Apollo 17 which commenced on December 6 1972 and concluded on December 19, 1972—the last scheduled manned mission to the moon for the United States and the only manned night launch of a Spacecraft.  Ron’s total flight time accrued during his career was 5,500 hours.

From “What It Is Really Like To Fly To The Moon” by Ron Evans:  “On my final trip back to the command module the sunlight was hitting the spacecraft just below the hatch; I paused and reflected on the second most beautiful sight of all -- the first being earth -- there in the brightness was painted the American flag; below that, the words “United State of America”.  My thoughts for that moment were that your nation, my nation, through our space endeavors had created an unprecedented prestige in the eyes of the entire world.  I’m pleased to have been a part of our nation’s program and even more please and grateful to be an American.”
