St. Isadore, Patron Saint of Farmers

Address: Xylan Rd
Piqua Ks, KS 66761

About this Exploration:

Saint Isadore was employed the greater part of his life as a farm laborer outside the city of Madrid, Spain. Legend has it, that angels helped him with his work in the fields. One of his fellow labors complained to their master that Isadore was always late for work in the morning. After investigating the master found Isadore at prayer while an angel was doing the plowing for him. On another occasion his master saw an angel plowing on either side of him, so that Isadore's work was equal to three of his fellow laborers.

Isadore was born in Madrid Spain in the last half of the twelfth century around 1070. He died in the year 1130. He was canonized on March 12, 1622.  His Feast Day is celebrated on May 15th.

In 1947 he was proclaimed the Patron Saint of the United States National Rural Life Conference.  Isadore's life-sized statue is dedicated to the farmers of Piqua. In years past special masses were held in the church yard and blessings were said for the newly planted spring crops by the Bishop of the Wichita Diocese.
