Recreational boating in the Missouri River is safe and serene.  Wild life abounds.  Canoeing offers a slow-paced view of Kansas.  Almost every community along the Missouri River provides a public boat ramp for easy access.  Leavenworth's boat ramp is at the east end of Dakota Ave. near the entrance to the public campground.  The river is rated between class I & IV.  The water is fast moving.  Barges generate large waves.  Dikes, often submerged, cause turbulent eddies.  A casual canoe trip from one town to the next can take from 2 1/2 to 4 hours depending on the distance.  Pack sunscreen, snacks, and water.

Public access points are open 24 hours.  Nighttime navigation requires nighttime navigation lights.
