About this Exploration:

The Lansing Correctional Facility formerly the Kansas State Penitentiary is the oldest prison in Kansas.  Architect Erasmus Carr designed the prison whose work can be seen throughout Kansas including the state capitol building.  Constructed of native stone the prison once sported Gothic castle tops which were taken down in the 1960s due to structural issues.  The original building no longer houses inmates.  The maximum and medium units are located behind the original building.  The minimum security men are located at East Unit on Kansas Highway 5.

While the general public cannot take tours of the prison they can take a virtual tour on the Lansing Correctional Facility’s website.  Travelers may see the original prison building from Kansas Avenue.

Prison artifacts are on display at the Lansing Historical Museum.
