Walter Johnson

Address:
Humboldt, KS 66748

About this Exploration:

Walter Johnson was born November 6, 1887 northwest of Humboldt.  Johnson's family moved to California in 1901.  During his high school years, Johnson's aptitude for baseball surfaced.  He played numerous positions but his fast-arm motion made him a natural pitcher.

At 17 years of age Johnson played as a pitcher for the semi-professional Idaho State League.  Johnson hesitated to leave his rural surroundings but was persuaded to sign up with the Washington Senators in 1907.  He played for the Senators for 20 years.  The team won the 1924 World Series.  Johnson was one of the few players not only known for his pitching but also for hitting more home runs than he allowed other batters to hit off of him.

Displays depicting Johnson's career can be seen at the Humboldt City Hall, 725 Bridge, or the Humboldt Historical Museum, Charles and 2nd.
