About this Exploration:

Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951) was a pioneer African American filmmaker and author.  His family participated in the largest African American migration to Kansas when his parents moved to Great Bend in 1901.

Inspired by his Kansas relatives, brothers Oscar and Swan Micheaux teamed up to make the first film made by  African-Americans in 1919.

He was the first African-American to publish a best-selling novel, writing seven in all.  Oscar has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Find the gravestone of Oscar Micheaux at the cemetery at Broadway and Coolidge.  Enter from Broadway by the red-brick cemetery office and stay on that road, bearing right and follow to the north side.  Take the first paved road south at the big spruce tree.  Micheaux's gravestone is the fourth one along the roadside.
