About this Exploration:

From the time of the Pilgrim fathers, pioneers trekking westward to find new homes in the wilderness of America looked first to provisions for places of worship, realizing that the moral tone of a community is maintained only in proportion to its religious spirit. It was in 1855 that the first religious services were held in Burlingame, with the whole community gathering either at a home or under the trees on the banks of a stream. There was no "Jew or Greek, bond or free,” but all were one in worship. However, discussions soon followed these church services on the merits of different doctrines.

The first resident pastor, Rev. Henry Morell, organized the Congregational Church in the fall of 1856.  The next year, while Burlingame was in the making,  the Baptists and the Methodists organizations were formed. The Presbyterian Church organized in 1860. The Presbyterians and Congregationalists joined forces in later years. Talk of federating three of the churches including the Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterians began in the 1920s but it was not until 1948 that these three churches consolidated into one, forming the Federated Church. "In union there is strength” taught Aesop and so it was found with these churches meeting together in what formerly was the Methodist church building built in 1908, but now bears on its front this sign: Welcome Federated Church.

Rev. Sam McCain Jr., pastor of the Federated Church, said in a 1951 Kansas City Star article, "The idea of one church is sound scripturally. Without a united church, we can hardly hope to proclaim the gospel in a powerful way to a divided world".
