About this Exploration:

The first settlers to locate in the area of Osage County came in the summer of 1854 including Charles Linkenauger, a pro-slavery businessman who arrived in August of that year. He made a claim at the mouth of Switzler Creek.

In 1866 he sold out and bought a farm adjoining it. He had a house built at a cost of about $2,500 and again moved to what is now the two-story stone building at 313 E. Santa Fe Avenue in 1867. At the time, it was considered one of the best improved places in this locality. In the fall of 1880 parties leased his ground for the purpose of prospecting for coal. The result was the discovery of a twenty to twenty-four inch vein of coal. The shaft was named the "Black Diamond," and proved a permanent paying investment for all parties interested.

Mr. Linkenauger was born December 19, 1826, in Montgomery County, Va.  In 1853, he settled in Kansas and took part in favor of a Free-State and honest governments during the early days.

Drive by and see the history on Santa Fe Ave.
