Earl W. Sutherland

Address:
Burlingame, KS 66413

About this Exploration:

Earl Wilbur Sutherland Jr., born November 19, 1915 in Burlingame was a pioneering pharmacologist and biochemist.  He won a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1971 for his discoveries concerning the mechanisms of the action of hormones, especially epinephrine, via second messengers such as cyclic adenosine monophosphate or more commonly referred to as cyclic AMP. This chemical was the “missing link” in a long series of biological control mechanisms.  Scientists throughout the world have called Sutherland's discovery “monumental' and many have built their research on his studies.

In addition to the Nobel Prize of 1971, Sutherland won the Albert Lasker Award for basic medical research in 1970, and received the National Medal of Science in 1973.  He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1966. A residential dormitory at Vanderbilt was named in Sutherland's honor, and a plaque and photographic display there commemorate his achievements. Sutherland was a distinguished professor of biochemistry at the University of Miami Medical School at the time of his death in 1974. A photo display of Sutherland receiving his award can be seen at the Burlingame Community Library.
